TULIPS, AN UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
“Life is the flower for which love is the honey.” - Victor Hugo
Did you know that tulips symbolize deep and unconditional Love? Well that’s fitting, because just thinking about the first sight of bloom gets us through winter. They’re one of the first flowers to emerge from the depths of cold and darkness, and the first sign of joy that spring is coming soon.
CLASSIC ELEGANCE. PURE BEAUTY. RICH HISTORY.
Yes, I’m obsessing about Tulips. Sorry not sorry! I’m just so excited to see them pop up!
Let’s get nerdy…
Tulips have a wild history that traces back to Central Asia. It’s believed that tulips began cultivating in Persia around the 10th century. People fell so deeply in love with them that they began to spread along the Silk Road.
(After reading about that I just imagine the Silk Road was lined with beautiful flowers.)
In the Ottoman Empire, tulips became highly esteemed, symbolizing abundance and indulgence. Tulips made their way to the West in the late 16th century when Carolus Clusius, a Flemish botanist, planted tulip bulbs at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. This was the start of Tulip Mania, particularly in the Netherlands, where the demand for tulip bulbs reached unprecedented levels, leading to the first speculative bubble in history. Like the Dot Com bubble or the Sub Prime Mortgage bubble.
RED TULIPS
There are so many beautiful varieties of tulips but none that hold my heart like the simple red tulips. They remind me of being a child gleefully terrorizing the tulips in my auntie’s garden. As an adult, I’ve met lots of fancy tulips, but none that make me feel as care free as when I was 8 years old.
I just love geeking out on the history and meaning of flowers and can’t wait to soak in all the love tulips bring once they bloom! ♥️
With love,
Yesenia
